Day 8: Cake Decorating and Cooking Competition By Sienna Kissack

A Cake too Beautiful to Eat

Today during Art of Cooking, the basic group decorated cakes to eat. We started off by cutting the layers of the cake to make three different layers per person. After we cut the cake, we cut the edges off to make the edges smooth. Then we used buttercream to stick the three layers together and spread butter cream all over the cake to cover it.

The process was a bit difficult for some, but for others it was easy. When cutting the cake I found it difficult because the cake kept crumbling and falling apart. This made it harder for me because when I tried to continue cutting it, the pieces kept falling apart. For others, theirs turned out really well, and their icing was spot on!

After cutting the edges and layers for our cake, we had to prepare the buttercream for icing our cakes. The process took a bit of time, but it was worth it. First, we had to put the bags of buttercream in a mixing bowl and use a mixer to make them more creamy. We had to do this for each bag, and also had to use some fire to melt some of the buttercream since it was a bit too cold.

We then used the buttercream to put our layers together and spread along the cake to make it look smooth. When that was finished, we used a pound and a half of fondant and rolled it to cover the whole cake. Everyone had a different design and they all turned out really well!

During our lunch break, we had a cooking competition. Everyone had to make a dish from scratch at home and bring it to school today. Everyone submitted something different and had to be judged by Mrs. Novak, Mr. Grisbee, and Chef Averille. The person had to be graded by presentation only, but the three judges also tasted some of the food as well. At the end of the day, we got our results on who the winner is, and people won were:

First place: Sienna and Camila

Camila's dish, empanadas

Second place: Ellie
